Norfolk: Wortwell

WORTWELL, a village 2½ miles N.E. of Harleston, is in Redenhall ecclesiastical parish, Depwade union, Earsham hundred and petty sessional division, Harleston county court district, Ipswich bankruptcy court district, Harleston polling district of South Norfolk, Redenhall rural deanery, and Norfolk archdeaconry. It had 416 inhabitants in 1881, and comprises 1102 acres. Its rateable value is £1677. The soil belongs mostly to Osborn Springfield, Esq. (exors), John Sancroft Holmes, Capt. F.P. Doughty, and S. Goulder.

Here is a Church School built in 1840, and supported by voluntary contributions and Government grant. Here are also an Independent Chapel built in 1773, and a Baptist Chapel built in 1822.

The Town Estate, 30 acres, is let for £45 a year, half of which is paid to the rector, and the remainder to the poor, pursuant to the trust deeds, which have been renewed from time to time since the year 1606. The Poor's Allotment consists of one equal moiety of 14A. 3R. 23P., awarded under the Enclosure Act of the 41st of George III. to the poor of Alburgh and Wortwell, and now let for £63, which is distributed in coal. The poor of Wortwell have also the following yearly rent-charges, viz., 6s. 8d. left by Margaret Clerke in 1585, 20s. left by Thomas Fuller in 1712, and 20s. left by an unknown donor out of a farm now belonging to O. Springfield, Esq.
