WESTFIELD comprises a small parish from 2 to over 3 miles S. of East Dereham, is in Mitford and Launditch union and petty sessional division, Dereham county court district, Norwich bankruptcy district, Mitford hundred, Dereham polling district of South Norfolk, Mitford division of Hingham rural deanery, and Norfolk archdeaconry. The rateable value is £1158. It had 112 inhabitants in 1881, and comprises 570 acres of land. Sir Wm. Clayton is lord of the manor, in which the fines are arbitrary. The soil mostly belongs to Mr. P.J. Smith, Mr. J.S. Foster, and Rev. J.B. Turner.
The CHURCH (St. Andrew), a small building in the Early English style, having a south porch, and low square tower with one bell, was restored, newly roofed, and refitted with open seats in 1862. It contains mural tablets of the Waller and Barrett families.
The discharged rectory, valued in the King's Book at £4 4s. 2d., is annexed to that of Whinburgh, in the patronage and incumbency of the Rev. Edward Grigson, M.A., whose grandfather purchased the advowson of the two livings in 1838. Here are 20A. of glebe, and the tithes of Westfield were commuted in 1840 for £150 per annum, but the late rector enfranchised the tithes into glebe, on which £5 was payable, so that the present tithes are £145.
Westfield is annexed to Whinburgh for School Board purposes.
The common was enclosed in 1810, when 7 acres of land were allotted to the poor, who have also 8s. a year from Mowting's charity and 10s. from land belonging to Miss Ann Oldfield.
