WALCOT, or Wolcot, on the coast, 1½ mile W. of Happisburgh, and 5½ miles E. by N. of North Walsham, is a parish in Smallburgh union, Happing hundred, Happing and Tunstead petty sessional division, North Walsham county court district, Norwich bankruptcy district, Stalham polling district of North Norfolk, Happing division of Waxham rural deanery, and Norfolk archdeaconry.

It had 121 inhabitants in 1881, and comprises 685 acres of land. It has a rateable value of £1694. James Palmer, Esq. (who is lord of the manor), Thos. Bush, John Bush, Wm. Wenn, and Mrs. Hardiment are the principal landowners. Much trade is done here in the landing of coal, &c. on the beach, where vessels are discharged. The Rookery, a handsome house of white brick, built in 1872, is occupied by Thos. Bush, Esq., the owner.

The CHURCH (All Saints) is an ancient flint building of the Perpendicular period, and consists of nave, chancel, south porch, and square embattled tower with five bells; it was restored in 1879, at a cost of £1200. The sedilia and chancel-screen still remain, and are of good Decorated work, the former having four seats, with canopies resting on clustered columns. Here are several marble tablets. Eighty-two members of the Siely family have been buried in their vault in this church.

The vicarage was certified at £26, and is now valued at £80. It was augmented in 1800 and 1817 with £600 of Queen Anne's Bounty, and is now in the incumbency of the Rev. H.N.W. Comyn, of Brumstead. The Bishop of Norwich is patron, and also appropriator of the tithes, which have been commuted for £321 per annum, exclusive of the yearly payment of £24.10s. to the rector of Ridlington, and £2.10s. to the impropriator and vicar of Happisburgh.

The poor have one and a quarter ton of coal a year from Mr. Wenn's farm, as compensation for a piece of waste land, enclosed in 1813 by Mr. Atkinson.

POST OFFICE at Mrs. Sarah Harbord's. Letters via Stalham arrive at 9.30 a.m., and depart at 1.40 p.m. Stalham is the nearest Money Order Office.
