THURGARTON, 6½ miles N. of Aylsham, and 5½ miles S. by W. of Cromer, is a parish in Erpingham union, North Erpingham hundred and petty sessional division, Holt county court district, Norwich bankruptcy court district, Aldborough polling district of North Norfolk, Repps rural deanery, and Norfolk archdeaconry. It had 231 inhabitants in 1881, and comprises 961 acres of land. The rateable value is £1760.

The soil belongs to the trustees of W.F.L.B. Windham, Esq., James Gay, and Herbert Cook, Esqs., and Messrs. Richard James Spurrell, George Chapman, and Benjamin Emery Wrench, and several smaller owners; but the Bishop of Norwich is lord of the manor and patron of the living.

The CHURCH (All Saints) is a small thatched building, comprising only nave and chancel, its tower having been taken down in 1882 [sic]. The rectory, valued in the King's Book at £9 6s. 8d., has 10 acres of glebe, and a yearly tithe rent-charge of £237 awarded in 1839. The Rev. William Francis Jex-Blake, M.A., is the present rector, and has a good rectory house, built in 1879.

The poor have 26s. a year, left by John Bacon, in 1732.
