STODY, in a narrow dale, 3 miles S. by W. of Holt, is a parish in Erpingham union, Holt county court district, Norwich bankruptcy district, Holt petty sessional division and hundred, Holt polling district of North Norfolk, Holt rural deanery, and Norwich archdeaconry. It has a rateable value of £1417 2s 6d., and a gross rental of £1537 5s. It had 130 inhabitants in 1881, and comprises 1227 acres of land. Most of the parish belongs to the Dowager Marchioness of Lothian, the lady of the manor.
The CHURCH (St. Mary) comprises nave, chancel, transepts, south porch, and embattled round tower with one bell. The chancel has been lately renovated, and its windows ornamented with coloured quarries. There are fragments of ancient stained glass in some of the windows.
The living is a rectory, valued in the King's Book at £6 13s. 4d., now united with Hunworth; the two are jointly worth £389 a year, and are in the gift of the Dowager Marchioness. The glebe is 32 acres, and the tithes of Stody were commuted in 1840 for £237 per annum. Rev. H.S. Fullagar, M.A., is the incumbent, and resides at Hunworth.
The common was enclosed in 1807, when 1A. 2R. were allotted for the use of the highways.
