STIBBARD, a scattered village, 4 miles E. of Fakenham, and its parish, rising in bold undulations, is in Walsingham union, Fakenham county court district, Norwich bankruptcy district, Gallow hundred and petty sessional division, Fakenham polling district of West Norfolk, Burnham rural deanery, and Norfolk archdeaconry. It had 458 inhabitants in 1881, living on 1468 acres, and has a rateable value of £2462.
It is partly the property of F.A. Morse Boycott, Esq., of Sennowville, Bushey Heath, Herts, the lord of the manor; but some of it is in W.B. Gill, Esq.'s manor of Stibbard Docking; and the rector has also a manor here. The Rev. Philip Francis, William Francis, and Hugh Rump, Esqs., Mr. James Emery, Lord Hastings, Rev. - England, and Mrs. King, have estates in the parish.
The CHURCH (All Saints) comprises nave, chancel, north aisle, south porch, and square tower with one bell; and was thoroughly restored in 1862, when the aisle was re-roofed, the porch erected, the entire building reseated with open benches, and a new reading-desk, altar rails, &c. provided, at a total cost of £667, raised by subscription, the patron being the largest contributor. Here is a handsome octagonal font of Derbyshire stone.
The rectory is valued in the King's Book at £11 13s. 4d., and now at £478, and here are 23A. 2R. 23P. of glebe. It is in the incumbency of the Rev. Thomas Allnutt, B.D.
The National School, erected in 1858, at a cost of £300, on land given by the rector, is attended by about 40 children.
The Wesleyans have a small chapel here.
The Fuel Allotment, 22A. 3R. 19P., let for £46 , was awarded at the enclosure in 1808, when the Town Land was exchanged for 6A. 1R. 33P. The poor have 26s. 8d. yearly, payable from a cottage and 2 acres of land left by J. Pearce by will dated 1639, and which at that time from old assessment of the parish is supposed to be the then annual letting value. The town lands let for £11 per year, and which several sums are now distributed to the poor under the order of the Charity Commisioners dated 1879.
POST OFFICE at Mr. Walter Norgate's. Letters arrive at 7 a.m., and are despatched at 5.20 p.m., viâ Dereham. Fakenham is the nearest Money Order Office, and Great Ryburgh the nearest Telegraph Office.
