Norfolk: Sisland

SISLAND, or Sizeland, 10 miles S.E. of Norwich, is a parish in Loddon and Clavering union and petty sessional division, Norwich county court and bankruptcy district, Loddon hundred, Loddon polling district of South Norfolk, Norfolk archdeaconry, and West Brooke rural deanery. The rateable value is £727 and the gross rental £798.

It had 71 inhabitants in 1881, and comprises 459 acres of land belonging to various owners, and lying in the manors of Charles and Brooke. Lord Berners is lord of the former, and Viscount Canterbury of the latter. J.W. Gilbert, Esq., and Captain Clarke have estates here.

The CHURCH (St. Mary) is a small thatched fabric, comprising nave, chancel and a low wooden tower with one bell. It formerly had a north aisle, of which part of the wall is still standing. The east window is partly filled with stained glass representing the Holy Spirit, St. Peter and St. Paul.

The rectory, valued in the King's Book at £126 is in the patronage and incumbency of the Rev. Wm. Willes Hobson, B.D., who has 18 acres of glebe, a substantial white brick residence built in 1816, and a yearly tithe rent-charge of £138 15s. The common was enclosed in 1813.
