RUSHALL, 3 miles W. of Harleston, has its parish in Depwade union, Earsham hundred and petty sessional division, Harleston county court district, Ipswich bankruptcy court district, Harleston polling district of South Norfolk, Redenhall rural deanery, and Norfolk archdeaconry. The parish, which extends into Suffolk, had 209 inhabitants in 1881, and comprises 1170 acres. The rateable value is £1737. The parish belongs to a number of freeholders, who pay small free rents to the Duke of Norfolk, as lord of the manor. The Hall Farm, 228 acres, belongs to Bethel Hospital, Norwich.

The CHURCH (Virgin Mary) comprises nave and chancel, and a tower which is round at the base and octagonal above. It was restored in 1878, at a cost of £1090, when one lancet window was inserted, and the church re-roofed.

The living is a discharged vicarage, valued in the King's Book at £4, and now in the patronage and incumbency of the Rev. Charles Gape, M.A., who has a good vicarage-house, built in 1869, at a cost of £1200, and 8½ acres of glebe, and a yearly tithe rent-charge of £143. The great tithes have been commuted for £300 a year, and belong to Emmanuel College, Cambridge,

The National School was built in 1858, at a cost of £250, and is attended by about 40 children.

In the 17th century, Thomas Pheasant left to this parish three tenements and 6½ acres of land, let at low rents to poor families. The rents are applied in the service of the church.
