Norfolk: Hargham

Land Tax: 1812-33

This tax was based on the value of property etc. and paid by the owner or (sometimes) occupier according to their agreement. It started in 1692 and valuations are based on those done at this date.

This Norfolk Record Office document [with the reference C/SCD 2/28/19 1812 and also on microform] is one of the Norfolk Quarter Sessions Land Tax Assessments which are arranged by divisions this one being in Shropham Hundred.

Norfolk to Wit
For the Parish of Hargham

An Assessment for one Year, from the 5th April, 1812, to the 5th April, 1813, made in pursuance of an Act passed in the 38th Year of the Reign of his Majesty George the Third, for granting an Aid to His Majesty, by a LAND TAX to be raised in Great Britain, for the Service of the Year 1798, and made perpetual by another Act passed in the 38th Year of the Reign of his said Majesty and also in pursuance of another Act passed in the 39th Year of the Reign of his said Majesty's Reign, for continuing and granting to his Majesty a Duty on Pensions, Offices, and Personal Estate, &c. for the Service of the Year 1812.

1815 Land Tax - No change from 1814.

The "Proprietors" name was given as "M^rs Ann Hare" as against just "M^rs Hare".

Notes

• Beevor family
  • Thomas Beevor :-
    Born 1753, married Anne (born 1774) daughter of Hugh and Mary Hare in Aug 1795, succeeded his father as 2nd Baronet in Feb 1814 and died in December 1820.
  • Thomas Branthwayt Beevor (b. 1798 the son of above Thomas and Anne (nee Hare) Beevor) succeeded his father as 3rd Baronet in Dec 1820.
• After the death of Thomas the 2nd Baronet in 1820 the land is shown as being owned by his widow "Lady Beevor" who was Anne Hare.
• In Whites 1836 directory it says all the land was owned by Sir Thomas Branthwaite (sic) Beevor, Bart. who resides at the Hall and lists only one farmer called "William Saunders". The Rate assessment for 1836 lists others actually farming the land.
• The will of Mary Hare, Widow of Hargham Hall is dated April 1816. She died aged 76 years and was buried 24/Dec/1815 at Hargham.
• The Rector was Robert Fountaine Elwin.
• Matthew Bowles was buried at Hargham on 24/June/1815 aged 70 years.
• William Saunders (of Snetterton) married Rebecca Bowles (daughter of a Matthew and Mary Bowles) by licence with consent of parents at Hargham on 3/May/1815.
