Land Tax: 1800-12

This tax was based on the value of property etc. and paid by the owner or (sometimes) occupier according to their agreement. It started in 1692 and valuations are based on those done at this date.

1800 Land Tax.

Norfolk to Wit
For the Parish of Hargham

An Assessment for one Year, from the 5th April, 1800, to the 5th April, 1801, made in pursuance of an Act passed in the 38th Year of the Reign of his Majesty George the Third, for granting an Aid to His Majesty, by a LAND TAX to be raised in Great Britain, for the Service of the Year 1798, and made perpetual by another Act passed in the 38th Year of the Reign of his said Majesty and also in pursuance of another Act passed in the 39th Year of the Reign of his said Majesty's Reign, for continuing and granting to his Majesty a Duty on Pensions, Offices, and Personal Estate, &c. for the Service of the Year 1800.

1804 Land Tax as 1803 except has "For the Rectory" with no name (see Notes) for a proprietor.

Notes

• Hugh Hare (born 23/Feb/1730) of Hargham Hall was buried in Hargham church in May 1800 aged 70 years. Anne his daughter and sole heiress married Thomas Beevor in Aug 1795.
• The Rector of Hargham from 11th Oct 1769 until October 1804 (died aged 75 years) was the Reverend William Lobb (according to the "List of Norfolk Benefices" by "Dawson Turner" published in 1847). The Patron of the Living in 1769 was Hugh Hare.
• Mr Lobb was succeeded by George Beevor on 3rd Oct 1804 until July 1810. George Beevor married Jane Branthwayt in 1791 and he died in 1810. The Patron of the Living in 1804 was his nephew Thomas Beevor. George Beevor was the brother of Thomas Beevor of Hethel (1st Baronet created 1784) who died 1814.
• The Reverend Robert Fountaine Elwin took up his post on 14th July 1810.
