Most of the parish is the property of Hastings Elwin, Esq., lord of the manor, but W.H. Butler, Esq., H.T. Knights, Esq., and Mr. B. Holmes, have estates here. The Hall, a spacious red brick mansion, belongs to H. Elwin, Esq., but is occupied by Mr. Henry Jackson Butler. The Grove, another handsome house, with pleasant grounds and a large farm attached, is the property and residence of Mr. Henry Woods Butler.
The CHURCH (St. Michael) comprises nave, chancel, north porch, and square tower with one bell. The rector is now restoring the church. The chancel is already finished, and presents a rich but chaste appearance. The roof, stalls, and part of the walls are fitted with well-carved oak. The windows are all of painted glass, representing St. Michael, and Scriptural subjects, in which angels appear. The remainder of the church, when completed, will be seated with oak, and the windows filled with painted glass.
The lord of the manor is patron of the living, which is a discharged rectory, valued in the King's Book at £7 12s. 6d., and now held by the Rev. Whitwell Elwin, B.A., who has a handsome brick residence in the Elizabethan style, built in 1852, and having pleasure grounds attached. The tithes have been commuted for £294 10s. per annum.
At the enclosure in 1811 an allotment of 20 acres was awarded to the poor for fuel. The BOARD SCHOOL for this and the parishes of Reepham-cum-Kerdiston is at Reepham (which see).
