Norfolk Poor Law after 1834
In 1834 a countrywide Poor Law Act
was passed setting up Unions and Incorporations (not all containing the same
number of parishes). Some parishes
which were already in previous Unions did not transfer to the new ones
until a later date.
Places names are the modern ones with aliases in ( ) following.

- The Norfolk parish of Redmere (or Redmore) was in this Union
at one time. It became part of the parish of Littleport (also
in this Union) in 1933.

- 1940's - Called Tower House Hospital
- 1990's - closed and redeveloped as "Tower Court"

Holbeach and Fleet. Location was on north side of Fleet
Road, PE12 7AX, [TF370249]. Also called "Fleet Road
Hospital".
The place called "Central Wingland" (partly in Norfolk)
is in this Union.
- Spalding Union
- Location on Pinchbeck Road, Spalding, c. PE11 1QN, [TF247235].
- Also called "Pinchbeck Road Hospital" and now demolished.

- 1835 - Used old Eye workhouse (built before 1800). Located at
Castleton Way, Eye, IP23 7BH,
[TM141741]. Became "Hartismere Hospital" which closed in 2006.
- 1835 - Used old Wortham workhouse (built before 1800). Located
on the South side of "The Ling", Wortham, Diss, IP22 1SR,
[TM0937578950]. Also called
"Ling House of Industry". Now called "The Homestead".
- Hoxne Union
Mendham has 800 (out of 3000) acres in Norfolk and a NFK population
of approximately 267 people in 1841 and was in this Union.
Workhouse at Stradbroke (Barley Green) [Map reference is TM252733]
in Suffolk.
Next to "Holly Tree Farm", Barley Green, Stradbroke, Eye, IP21 5LY.
Marked on some maps as "Hoxne Hundred House".
- Mildenhall Union
- 1836 - Church Yard (Church Walk), Mildenhall, c.IP28 7EE, [TF709746].
- 1895 - Kings Way, Mildenhall, c.IP28 7NL, [TF717749] - Replaced previous
workhouse. Now demolished and a Library etc. built at site.
- Mutford and Lothingland Incorporation
- 1765 - At Union Lane, Oulton (near Lowestoft and Flixton),
NR32 3AX, [TM524953]. Also known as "Oulton Institution".
- c.1940's - Called "Lothingland House".
- Became "Lothingland Hospital".
- 2004 - "Oulton Park Care Centre"
- Also called "Mutford Union".
- Note the Workhouse was built in Oulton on the parish
boundary with Flixton and these places should not be
confused with another Flixton near Bungay
in Suffolk or Oulton near Buxton in Norfolk.
- Stow Incorporation (later Union)
- 1781 - Located at Stow Lodge, Union Road, Onehouse
(west of Stowmarket), IP14 3EQ. [TM033591].
- Became "Stow Lodge Hospital" which closed in 1991.
Workhouse now converted to flats.
- Thingoe Union (later Bury St. Edmunds Union)
- At Suffolk General Hospital (1836) - Mill Road/Hospital Road,
Bury St. Edmunds, IP33 3NE, [Map reference is TL846637].
Closed in the 1970's.
- Borough of Bury St. Edmunds had a separate workhouse in
College Street, c. IP33 1NL, [TL855639].
- Wangford Incorporation (later Union)
- 1765 - Incorporation Workhouse built at Shipmeadow [TM378898].
Location is now called "Viewpoint Mews", (South of Main
Bungay to Beccles Road), NR34 8EX.
- 1835 - Incorporation became Wangford Poor Union.
- 1938 - Closed.
- 1940s - Marked as "St James' Hostel" on maps.
- Also called "Shipmeadow House".
- Buildings have now been converted to housing.
